Coordinator of Youth Evangelization
Hello, my name is Tsumani! I have been involved in camps since 1980. I have a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from the University of Calgary, my Canadian Certificate of Youth Ministry Studies, a Certificate of Catholic Studies from Newman/Dayton and have attended the Canadian Camp Director’s Course. This spring I completed training from the Outdoor Council of Canada in order to train and certify Level One Hiking Leaders.
I have been a facilitator of the Called to Protect program for the Archdiocese of Edmonton since 2012. I am also the mother of 6 children! The community at camp has been a very important blessing in my life. I am grateful that camp continues to bring fun, faith and friendship to hundreds of young people each summer!
Assistant Program Director
Hei! (This is Norwegian, not a typo, I promise) I’m your resident Panda, serving y’all as the Assistant Program Director in 2018! I am unbelievably excited to be plopping down at camp this summer. Camp means oh so very much to me. It’s where I have not only developed my faith, but have developed bonds stronger than adamantium and connected with the great outdoors. I’m rolling headfirst into my last year of a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, where I learn the hows and whys of body movement, functioning and its social aspects. This past year I’ve been living in Norway, learning tons, broadening horizons and having my mind blown. This summer is lining up to be a blast, with amazing staff and so so much energy and love that’s already building up. I cannot wait to share all of it with everybody soon!
Fun fact #1: Panda in Chinese is 熊猫 (xióngmāo) which literally translates to “bear cat”

Hello! My name is Sunshine and I am so excited to be serving Camp Encounter as the Program Director. Ever since my first week out at camp I have been completely in love with it. Camp has changed my life for the better, and has brought me closer to God. I worked at Camp Encounter in the summers from 2012-2015 as a program staff! I graduated in 2017 from the University of Alberta with a degree in Elementary Education, so maybe one day Miss. Sunshine will be your teacher. I am beyond excited to hang out with all of you at camp, and to have a fun time adventuring, crafting, singing, and ultimately experiencing God’s love first hand.

Summer Outtrip Programmer
Hi there! My name is Grizzly or Grizz for short.. If I wasn't a staff member there is something I'd rather be, if I wa... wait a minute I am a staff member there is nothing I would rather be! And there is no place I would rather be either! I grew up at camp looking up at the staff, they were like my hero's. To have the chance to become one of those hero's to kids is a dream come true. It is my first summer as staff and I am so excited to be on the outrip team and explore Catfish Island as much as it can be explored.
"Where are you? Here! What time is it? Now! What are you? This moment!"-Peaceful Warrior
Spring&Summer Dorms/First Aider
Hey there! My name is Shadow, but around camp you might hear me more commonly get called Shad, Chad, Shadley, Shaddy… this list of nicknames never seems to end! I am very excited to be back for my second summer as staff here at Camp Encounter, and even more excited because I get to run First Aid and Dorms! Camp has been the place I call home for about 13 years now and I thank God everyday my parents decided to send me to summer camp when I was just 7 years old. I am currently in my third year of Nursing at Macewan University, and will be returning for my fourth and final year in the fall of 2018. Upon finishing my degree I hope to get a job in pediatrics. This summer I am very excited to explore Catfish Island, sing some crazy songs, and eat food cooked over a fire with all of you!

Spring&Summer Rec Programmer
Howdy folks! My name is Argo and this will be my third summer as a program staff. I will be returning to my roots, leading the Recreation program as I did in my first summer! It will most definitely be an exciting time. Following the rip-roarin’ events of the summer months, I will be entering my third year in a Bachelor of Education at the U of A.

Summer Crafts Programmer
Hello!! You can call me Chickpea but don’t call me late for dinner. I’m so excited to be working at camp this summer! I have been attending camp since I was seven years old. First as a camper, then a counsellor and now a member of the staff! Camp Encounter has always had a special place in my heart. The memories, laughs, community and love brings me back every year. I will be hanging out in the craft shack with my good pal Sparrow! I love art, theatre, yoga, nature, Disney, giraffes, dogs (except for dogs that bite my face) and God! I cannot wait to get craftin’ with you all and have a fantastic summer!

Summer Adventure Programmer
Hi! I'm Bard! A bard is like a medieval travelling storyteller - so now you know! I also go by Bird, Barn, Bark or Brad, though, so you don't have to memorize it. I'm currently a student at NAIT studying film and graphic design. I'm a super nerd who loves all kinds of computery stuff, but I also have a huge passion for the outdoors - so I'm incredibly excited to be back to Camp as one half of the Adventure team! I love Camp, I grew up in the community and have learned so much about God and his creation through it. It's enriched my life and given me some of my most cherished life experiences. This year, some incredible adventures are in store and I'm so excited to share them all with you!
Summer Spirits Programmer
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… wait go back it is a bird. More specifically, it’s a Falcon! Hey everyone! I’m so excited to come back and do Spirits once more at one of the best places to learn about faith. But don’t worry, my co-programmer Winter and I are going to make sure we do that in some really fun and exciting ways! This will be my 3rd year as a staff and 9th straight summer at Camp Encounter! Ever since I was a wee little camper I’ve loved Spirits and how I was able to connect with God and see how He can bring people together at camp in ways that not many people get to experience, so I hope to do that for all of you guys! A little bit about me: I’ll be going into my third year of the U of A’s Secondary Education program so I can’t wait to finally be in the classroom! Fun fact: my favorite song ever is called Spirit Bird and I first heard it at camp, life’s funny that way! Another fun fact: I’m a triplet!
“The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning. It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, let me be singing when the evening comes.”
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
Mallard’s a duck who likes Encounter a lot…
But when it came to veggies he most certainly did NOT!
Mallard hates veggies, no matter the season.
And don’t ask him why. He certainly has his reason.
Regardless, to him Camp is perfectly right.
Even if his theme dinner costume ends up too tight.
And Mal’s biggest reason for returning at all:
Is spending time with the campers, the big and the small.
“They’re all super awesome and they all wear cool shoes.
Not to mention adorable, like a herd of Whos.”
And soaring back to Outrip doesn’t make Mallard frown.
Because it’s gonna be crazy, like Verm his home town,
For Grizzly's his partner, the one who’s bio is maybe(?) beneath
And who gets called nearly everything except “Christmas Wreath.”
Mallard is excited, with a smile not a sneer,
Because soon will be summer, it’s practically here!
Spring&Summer Rec Programmer
Hello!! My name is Avalanche and I’m very excited to come back to my second year here as staff, and this time for both spring and summer! This spring will be especially exciting as it is my first spring, and I especially love when kids and teachers all skip school to visit us at Camp. I’m more than thrilled to be back to not only play lots of crazy games in Rec, but to just hang out at the campfire and on Catfish Island. Outside of camp, I have been working on my Bachelor of Arts at the University of Alberta, and as a History Major, I have been fascinated by some important pioneers in the field of Reck. I was especially inspired by the vintage lyricist and musician, Robert van Winkle, known as Vanilla Ice in his day, who once said that he does “freestyle jumping” and that he “rides with confidence.” With this new Wreck history in mind, I’m very excited to come back and have some fun!
“Show me a smile, and I’ll show you one back.” -Vanilla Ice
Summer Crafts Programmer
Hey everyone, I’m back for another round of campfire songs, rowdie lunches, morning worships, island trips, slip and slides, and most of all: crafts! This summer, I'm moving off Catfish Island and will be hanging out in the Craft Shack with Chickpea helping you bring to life all your wacky ideas and secret friend gifts. Ever since my first week at camp over half my life ago, I’ve been in love with the community and the beautiful nature surrounding it. I’m stoked to be back this summer and be able to spend a week with all of you! Until then, I’ll be at the U of A studying to become a physics teacher, while trying to find time to take pictures and climb.

Summer Adventure Programmer
Hi all, it’s Juniper! I am super excited to return to Camp Encounter for yet another incredible summer. I have been coming here for as long as I can remember, and it has truly become my second home. I continue to be amazed by the incredibly supportive and loving camp community. I am in my first year of Nutrition at the University of Alberta and am loving it so far! This summer you’ll find me on the rock wall, in the archery range, in a few canoes, and throughout the challenge course.
“Never regret a day in your life: good days give happiness, bad days give experience, worst days give lessons, and best days give memories.”
summer Spirits Programmer
Well, hello there! My name is Winter and I am overjoyed to be one half of the Spirits team this summer! Crazy story: I was actually born at Camp so I grew up watching the staff members with their funny names and big personalities. I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t thinking about becoming “one of them.” And now that dream is coming true!
After taking a year off of school to refocus and reconnect with God, others, and myself, I am planning on attending the University of Alberta in September to begin a combined degree in Drama and Education! In the meantime, you can usually find me tucked under blankets with a book and tea or else rocking out to musical soundtracks/praise and worship songs. This summer, bring your questions and an open heart to the Spirit’s Spot because it’s gonna be super “cool” ;)
